Mega Man’s movement speed is consistent, and he can’t duck or make himself smaller in any way. So long as he’s got about three pixels of his foot planted, he’ll stay on a platform. Mega Man can jump about three sprites vertically and three sprites horizontally. His ammunition is infinite with this weapon. Getting closer to an enemy makes the shots disappear more quickly, allowing the player to fire more rapidly. Once the player memorized the color pattern associated with each weapon, it would be immediately clear which one Mega Man had equipped at any given point.Ģ) Mega Man’s basic ability set: Mega Man can shoot straight forward, with three bullets allowed on-screen at once. Working within the limitations the hardware and resolution of the period, alternating colors was a simple and clear way to express Mega Man’s different states. Those colors can be swapped for other colors without losing Mega Man’s distinct appearance. His outfit uses an instantly-recognizable two-color pattern. The first game has a number of flaws, but the series rapidly improved in its first few installments. The second game is where it made its big sales splash, and from a design standpoint, I’d say the third game is where it got all of its ducks in a row. Mega Man didn’t instantly stumble upon its success, financially or critically. As with the initial plan, however, that all starts with explaining exactly what Mega Man does well and why it was able to distinguish itself in a sea of similar competitors. The idea is to see how well each game uses the concepts it borrows from Mega Man and what it does to carve its own path, if anything. So, instead of a single article talking about three games, I think I’m going to write several articles, each dedicated to a single Mega Man-inspired game. While thinking about that, I realized I ought to define what exactly makes Mega Man as good as it is, which then got me thinking about all of the other games that followed in Mega Man’s footsteps. Initially, I thought I’d just write up a thing talking about how those two games take different approaches to biting off Mega Man, to varying degrees of success.
